Use your hook to join the conversation that’s happening in your reader’s mind. For example, if your customer research shows that your reader is preoccupied with solving a specific problem AND you’re writing about how to solve that specific problem, then consider writing an open loop hook that digs into the problem and teases that you’re about to provide a solution to that problem.

Many highly effective hooks create an open loop. Open loops work for blog posts, social media posts, email subject lines, web page headlines, fascinations… the list goes on and on! That open loop’s goal is to make the reader so curious they can’t help but continue reading. One easy way to create an open loop is to ask an open-ended question related to the desired outcome your reader wants most.

Start With Clarity

Don’t write from scratch. Use formulas and writing prompts to overcome the blank page. My favorite prompt to kickstart the writing process is Luke Sullivan’s “First, say it straight. Then say it great.” (from Hey Whipple, Squeeze This) because it forces you to clarify your idea first before you layer on “the art” of advertising. (“The art” can quickly muddy clarity, so it’s important to understand what you’re trying to say, before you figure out how you’re going to say it.)

In the end, a hook is all about tapping into psychology and understanding what makes people tick. Use emotive language, spark curiosity, tap into needs, provide specifics and leave them wanting more – do that and your content is sure to grab attention.
