With the holiday season right around the corner, it’s time to get your WooCommerce store ready for the busy shopping season. Products are one of the most critical aspects when running a successful online business. Without product variety, customers cannot find what they’re looking for. If you’ve yet to learn how to add your products to your WooCommerce store, keep on reading as this post will show you some of our recommendations.
But before we get to that, let’s take a quick look at what WooCommerce is.
What Is WooCommerce?
WooCommerce is a WordPress e-commerce plugin that is open-source. It’s aimed at small to medium-sized online merchants who use WordPress. The plugin, which was released on September 27, 2011, quickly gained popularity due to its ease of installation and customization and the freeware status of the basic product.
One of the most popular questions is…can it be connected to Facebook? You bet! Adding a Facebook integration to your WooCommerce store allows you to upload your product catalog and generate carousel advertising, which will help you attract even more clients!
In addition, visitors will be able to browse and select products from a catalog. When they have decided what they want, they will be routed to the checkout page of your website where they may complete the transaction. And the best part is that the dynamic advertisements will be updated in real time as your inventory changes. Even if you don’t have a catalog, you can utilize one that has an unlimited amount of products.
What Are Product Categories, Tags, And Attributes?
Before adding your first item, let’s get acquainted with how product categories, tags, and attributes work.
Product Categories
Product categories and tags are similar to standard WordPress categories and tags in terms of how they function. They can be established, modified, and selected at any moment. This may be done when you first create a product or return to modify it or the category/tag.
Attributes
The second step is to choose which attributes you wish to display. Each product can have its own set of global characteristics (e.g., in layered navigation).
Product Types
We can start adding items once we’ve created our attributes and categories and stock management. The first thing to decide when adding a product is what sort of product it is. Products can be classified as simple, grouped, virtual, downloadable, external or affiliate, and variable. We will discuss the specifics of each product type below.
SKU
A stock-keeping unit (SKU) or product number is a unique number given to each item for inventory management. The SKU field can accommodate up to 255 characters, including alphanumeric values and a few special characters. The input is checked using the WordPress function santize_text_field, which means HTML, invalid UTF characters, Octets will be removed when saved (an octet is defined by % followed by 2 characters with a value in the range of a-f or 0-9). This is something we will dive deeper into in a future article, but let’s get back to the topic at hand, adding products!
How To Add A Simple Product
Here are the steps needed to add a simple product:
- Go to WooCommerce > Products > Add Product. You have a familiar interface, which means you won’t have much trouble doing this.
- Enter a product Title and Description.
- Go to the Product Data panel, and pick downloadable (digital) or virtual (service) if applicable.
How To Add A Grouped Product
A grouped product is built in the same way as a basic product. Grouped goods are similar to lists of additional items in your store, and as a result, do not have their own prices or stock numbers. To make one, choose Grouped Product from the Product Type dropdown. You then take the following steps:
- Go to: WooCommerce > Products > Add New.
- Enter a Title for the Grouped product.
Scroll down to Product Data and pick Grouped from the dropdown. The cost, as well as several other fields, go away. This is natural because a Grouped Product is a collection of items where you can find this data.
- You then click “Publish.”
The Grouped product is still an empty group. To this Grouped product, you need to create products and then add them and add existing products. To do this, you can take the following steps:
- Go to: WooCommerce > Products > Add New.
- Pick the Grouped product you wish to add products to.
- Scroll down to Product Data and go to Linked Products.
- Pick Grouped Products, and search for the product by typing
- Click on the products you wish to add.
- Update
- You can rearrange the Grouped Products by dragging and dropping them. After you save your changes, the new arrangement will be visible on the product page.
How To Add A Virtual Product
Adding a Simple product registers the product type as a Virtual item by selecting the checkbox in the product type panel. This box is moved to each variation with Variable items. Enabling this disables all shipping-related fields, such as shipping dimensions. A virtual product will also not initiate the shipping calculator in the cart and checkout.
How To Add A Downloadable Product
In the product type panel, you can select the Virtual checkbox for a Simple product. This option is now in the Variable products section of Advanced options. When you enable this, all shipping-related fields, such as shipment dimensions, are disabled. The shipping calculator in the cart and checkout will not be triggered by a virtual product.
How To Add An External/Affiliate Product
From the product type dropdown, choose “External/Affiliate.” The Product info meta box will be somewhat altered as a result of this. It starts by removing the shipping part from the left side of the screen. The Product URL and Button text fields are added to the General section after that. The Product URL parameter specifies the location from which consumers can purchase this item. Then, under Button text, you can alter the default Add to cart button text to whatever you like.
How To Add A Variable Product
Variable products are one of the more difficult product kinds to work with. They allow you to create versions of the same product, each with its own SKU, price, and stock level.
While setting up an online store, one of the first steps you need to take will be to add products to your store. If you need more guidance on how to add products to your WooCommerce store, you can also check out this WooCommerce tutorial video on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCPjthg0FOs
